Mock Newbery

Each January Rhode Island librarians gather to select a "mock" version of the Newbery award. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in the United States during the preceding year.

On January 14, 2020 a group of 10 children's and school librarians selected the following winner and honor books:

Mock Newbery Honor Books:

The Line Tender by Kate Allen
Pay Attention, Carter Jones by Gary Schmidt
Sweeping Up the Heart by Kevin Henkes

The winning books were selected from the final list examined and discussed by a group of children's and school librarians following the criteria for the real Newbery committee.
