State Aid to Libraries

The State of Rhode Island provides financial support to libraries in accordance with Rhode Island General Law 29-6. State aid to libraries, also referred to as state grant-in-aid (GIA), is administered by the Office of Library and Information Services in the categories below.

Formulas and eligibility requirements for grant-in-aid are established in state statutes and regulations set by the Library Board of Rhode Island and promulgated by the Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS). OLIS administers the grant-in-aid programs, certifying eligibility and determining award amounts.

  • Institutions that currently receive state aid to libraries:
    • Rhode Island Department of Corrections
    • Rhode Island School for the Deaf

  • Provided for state-supported institutions per RIGL 29-6-7
  • Providence Public Library serves as the SRRC through contract with OLIS
  • AskRI is the official website of the SRRC
  • Provided to facilitate statewide access to databases for Rhode Island residents per RIGL 29-6-9
