OLIS offers consultation services to youth services librarians in the areas of collection development, programming, services, facilities, policies, planning and evaluation. The Youth Services Advisory Council convenes quarterly to advise OLIS on library services to children, teens and families. OLIS is a pro-active advocate for children and teens, and library services for youth and collaborates with other agencies for information sharing, cooperative projects and school/public library cooperation.
OLIS supports library services for children and teens by providing continuing education for librarians, facilitating information sharing through commmunities of practice such as the Children's Services Roundtable and Young Adult Roundtable, and book evaluation activities such as the Mock Newbery and Mock Caldecott programs.
OLIS supports reading programs for youth including the Summer Reading Program, the Rhode Island Children's Book Award, and in collaboration with the RI Center for the Book, Kids Reading Across Rhode Island.
