Mock Newbery Award 2007

Each January Rhode Island librarians gather to select a "mock" version of the Newbery award. The Newbery Medal is awarded annually to the author of the most distinguished contribution to American literature for children published in the United States during the preceding year. The Award is restricted to authors who are citizens or residents of the United States.

On January 3, 2007 a group of children's services librarians, school library media specialists and teachers selected the following winner and honor books:

Medal:
The Miraculous Journey of Edward Tulane by Kate DiCamillo

Honors:
Black Duck by Janet Taylor Lisle
Gossamer by Lois Lowry
Rules by Cynthia Lord
Water Street by Patricia Reilly Giff

The above selections were made from the final list developed by a group of children's services librarians, school library media specialists and teachers. The group held three meetings over the past three months and followed the criteria for the real Newbery committee.

On January 22, 2007 the Newbery Medal was awarded to The Higher Power of Lucky by Susan Patron, illustrated by Matt Phelan. Newbery Honor Books include Penny from Heaven by Jennifer L. Holm, Hattie Big Sky by Kirby Larson, and Rules by Cynthia Lord. Look for more information on ALA's Association for Library Services to Children website.
