FAQ: WebJunction Online Courses

About the Courses

Is there a charge?
There is no charge for staff of LORI libraries. OLIS is assuming the cost with grant funds from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, Staying Connected Grant.

What courses may I take?
Approximately 75% of the online courses listed in WebJunction's course catalog are technology related and are therefore covered with this grant funding. A summary list is provided here, current as of Feb. 14, 2007. It can be viewed online and/or printed on 11X17" paper.

You may also sign up for one of the 4 self-paced large groups (series):

  • Basic Computing and Applications Series,
  • Networking Series,
  • Unix and Linux Series, and/or
  • Web Development Series.

If you sign up for a group you may take as many of the courses as you want within one year of enrolling, but must take a minimum of 5 courses from the group within the year.

Are CEU's available for these courses?

Yes, from Webjunction. See their FAQ on Continuing Education Credits.

How do I find out more about these courses?
Go to WebJunction Online Course Catalog and click on the course(s) you are interested in from the series to see the summary for each online course. There is not necessarily a listing of lessons within the course, or the estimated time needed to complete it. There are also free courses offered within the Series as well as a course of the month that is discounted. Check them out! You will need to go back to fill out the form on the OLIS site before you can sign up for the courses.

Note that WebJunction lists approximately 270 courses; about 200 of these are technology related and are eligible. OLIS grant funding will cover all courses in the following groups only:

Self-paced Basic Computing and Applications Series
Self-paced Managing Public Access Computing
Self-paced Networking Series
Self-paced Sustainability, Advocacy, & Outreach
Self-paced Technical Collection
Self-paced Unix and Linux Series
Self-paced Using the Internet
Self-paced Web Development Series
...and 6 courses in the LE&D University of North Texas Course list.

Why doesn't OLIS subsidize all the courses listed in the WebJunction Online Course List?
It has nothing to do with the value we put on any of these courses. It is simply that the funds used for this are restricted to the grant objective of supporting increased technology skills in library staff to further enhance the library's provision of public access computing.

Can I take any of the other WebJunction Courses NOT on the OLIS list?
Yes, you can register for any of the classes as an individual providing you have a (free) membership/login at WebJunction but you must pay for the course yourself. Most courses are either $25 or $50.

In order to take one of the courses OLIS sponsors, do I have to register both on the OLIS site, and WebJunction too?
Yes, you will ultimately enroll in the course on the WebJunction site, but FIRST you have to fill out the form on the OLIS site so we can email you the code which will cover the purchase price. You also need a general login for WebJunction; many of you have one already, but if you don't, register with WebJunction at any time, just once, and it's free. There are additional benefits to WebJunction membership. Registration is available from the LOGIN section on the homepage.

To Register:

After I've gotten a free WebJunction membership, and have looked at the course list and decided what I'd like to take.....What do I do? FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW:

  1. Fill out the form on the OLIS Website specifically for WebJunction courses. It is also accessible from the standard OLIS CE pages. When listing your courses, refer to the OLIS course list and write in the Group Code and Course Name exactly as it appears on that list.
    • To sign up for individual courses: use group initials - course name, e.g., PowerPoint 2003
    • To sign up for one of the four Groups/Series: write the word "group" - series name,
e.g. group - Web Development Series
  2. After you have submitted the form (it may take as much as two days) we will send you email with the code needed so that you can enroll for the course at WebJunction for free.
  3. Return to the WebJunction Course List; scroll down the full list to choose individual courses, click Purchase and choose "Add to Cart " for each course and group. You will find the four course Groups/Series, at the end of the list of individual courses.
  4. When you've chosen the courses you want, choose "Checkout". On the screen you'll see a text box to enter Coupon Code. Enter the code OLIS has sent you and choose "Apply".
  5. Follow the WebJunction instructions for logging in and accessing your course.
  6. Remember to make a note of the courses you've completed and the evaluation criteria described above so that you have it in order to fill out the quarterly evaluation from OLIS that you will receive in email.

Does the Code Expire?
You can use the code immediately and for up to 3 months. If you need to wait longer to take the course, please let us know, and we'll reissue a code.

Once I enroll, how long can I access the course? How long can I take to finish it?
From the date of enrolling you have one year to access the course materials online. E.g., if you wait 2 months before enrolling, you will still have the 12 months of access.

What information does OLIS get regarding my course activity on WebJunction?
OLIS gets a quarterly list of who enrolled, and what course they registered for, which we can match up with the list generated from the OLIS registration, and use to send out evaluations and feedback forms.
We do not get any information about whether the student fulfilled the requirements or finished the course.

What sort of feedback does OLIS ask of me regarding my course activity on WebJunction?
Keep a record of courses you have completed.
OLIS will send a quarterly evaluation form asking you to list the courses you've completed and rate them on a scale of useful to not useful, on a scale of too general to too specific, and other observations you have about taking courses online.
