Hands-On Literacy

Wednesday, October 21, 2009
3:45 p.m. - 5:30 p.m.
Providence Public Library

Presenter(s)/Discussion Leader(s): Wendy Kirchner, Librarian, Meeting Street School

Wendy Kirchner of Meeting Street School will present Hands-On Literacy. The goal of this workshop is to teach librarians and teachers how to effectively include children with special needs in library group activities. Participants will be able to identify books and materials suitable for mixed groups of children that might include those with visual impairment, autism, and developmental delays. Each participant will create a well designed tactile book suitable for any child. Areas addressed during this workshop will include: the role of objects or raised illustrations; the limitations and challenges of using tactile illustrations; and the sequence of difficulty suitable for the varied needs of all children. These hands-on comprehension strategies will build oral language skills by enabling children to understand the vocabulary and sequence of events in a read aloud book. By knowing how a child with special needs can learn, librarians and teachers will build confidence in designing inclusive programs.

Registration required. Limited to 25 participants.
Intended Audience: elementary school library media specialists, elementary school teachers
