Funding Opportunity and Appropriation Resolution

NCFL (National Center for Family Literacy) has launched a new funding opportunity to support family literacy in the library setting. Through the Libraries and Families Award, NCFL will distribute $30,000 in funding to libraries that are pioneering programs to families. Funding for the program will come from Better World Books’ Libraries Discards & Donations program, a free service that helps libraries manage their unwanted books. Interested applicants can sign up to be notified when the criteria and application are available, which should be no later than Oct. 1.

The U.S. Conference of Mayors recently passed a resolution urging Congress to authorize and designate appropriations for family literacy programs.

Scituate Public Library awarded grant

Leslie B. McDonough, Director of the Scituate (RI) Public Library, announced that the Library has been awarded an American Association for the Advancement in Science (AAAS) Skin Deep Library Project mini-grant ($500). The library will cooperate with the Scituate Health Alliance to present programs about maintaining healthy skin - with particular outreach to families with young children and teens.

The grant funds are from AAAS for public library programming. more information

RI Institution Awarded an IMLS Museums for America Grant

The Rhode Island Historical Society, Providence, RI, was awarded $99,450 for the project “Graphics Division Inventory.” For the project, the Rhode Island Historical Society will inventory, survey, and create collection-level cataloging records for the audiovisual materials in the Society’s Graphics Division. The Society pledged a matching amount of $103,977. Under the Museums for America grant program, the Historical Society award came from the Collections Stewardship category.

Grants up to $3,000 for conservation projects

2010 guidelines for American Heritage Preservation Program
The Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and the Bank of America Charitable Foundation are pleased to announce the 2010 guidelines for the American Heritage Preservation Program. This public-private partnership will fund the preservation of endangered and fragile art works, rare books, scientific specimens, and historical documents (photographs, maps, deeds, etc.) held in small and medium-sized museums, archives, and libraries. Two RI insitutions recieve Big Read awards

The latest round of Big Read grants was just announced by IMLS and NEH. The Rhode Island winners are:

Preservation Society of Newport County Newport, RI for The Great Gatsby. Award amount: $7,500

Rhode Island College - James P. Adams Library, Providence, RI for Edgar Allan Poe. Award amount: $20,000

4 RI institutions awarded Connecting to Collections Bookshelves

Congratulations to the four most recent RI organizations to be awarded Connecting to Collections Bookshelves. The Bookshelf comprises resources for collections typically found in art or history museums and in libraries’ special collections, with an added selection of texts for living collections. It is a component of Connecting to Collections: A Call to Action, a strategic initiative by IMLS to address the challenges described in A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America’s Collections, an IMLS-funded study conducted by Heritage Preservation.

Mini-Grant supports terrific time for teens

Congratulations to Cranston Public Library. Cranston Public Library was recently one of just 20 libraries in the nation to be chosen by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) to receive a YALSA Teen Tech Week mini-grant. The grant money and the products were used to put on a week-long series of activities geared toward teens, allowing them to explore different types of technology.
Check out how the library leveraged the grant to creat a series of program for young adult patrons.

Last Chance to Apply for Connecting to Collections Bookshelf from Institute of Museum and Library Services (IMLS) and American Association of State and Local History
Deadline: March 9, 2009
IMLS is offering a third round of competition to distribute an additional 1000 Bookshelves, a core set of books, DVDs, online resources, and an annotated bibliography that are essential to the care of collections. The IMLS Bookshelf focuses on collections typically found in art or history museums and in libraries’ special collections, with an added selection of texts for zoos, aquaria, public gardens, and nature centers. Applications be submitted to AASLH until March 9, 2009.
