			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p><a href="http://www.famlit.org">NCFL</a> (National Center for Family Literacy) has launched a new funding opportunity to support family literacy in the library setting. Through the Libraries and Families Award, NCFL will distribute $30,000 in funding to libraries that are pioneering programs to families. Funding for the program will come from Better World Books&#8217; Libraries Discards &amp; Donations program, a free service that helps libraries manage their unwanted books. Interested applicants can&nbsp;<a href="http://www.famlit.org/libraries-and-families-award?tr=y&amp;auid=5193407">sign up</a>&nbsp;to be notified when the criteria and application are available, which should be no later than Oct. 1.&nbsp;</p>
<p>&nbsp;</p>
<p>The U.S. Conference of Mayors recently passed a resolution urging Congress to authorize and designate appropriations for family literacy programs.&nbsp;</p>

The Bookshelf comprises resources for collections typically found in art or history museums and in libraries&#8217; special collections, with an added selection of texts for living collections. It is a component of Connecting to Collections: A Call to Action, a strategic initiative by IMLS to address the challenges described in A Public Trust at Risk: The Heritage Health Index Report on the State of America&#8217;s Collections, an IMLS-funded study conducted by Heritage Preservation.</p>

			<content:encoded><![CDATA[<p>Congratulations to Cranston Public Library. <a href="http://cranstonlibrary.org/">Cranston Public Library</a> was recently one of just 20 libraries in the nation to  be chosen by the Young Adult Library Services Association (YALSA) to receive a YALSA  Teen Tech Week mini-grant. The grant money and the products were used to put on a week-long series of  activities geared toward teens, allowing them to explore different types of  technology.<br />

IMLS is offering a third round of competition to distribute an additional 1000 Bookshelves, a core set of books, DVDs, online resources, and an annotated bibliography that are essential to the care of&#160; collections. The IMLS Bookshelf focuses on collections typically found in art or history museums and in libraries&#8217; special collections, with an added selection of texts for zoos, aquaria, public gardens, and nature centers.
