Kids Reading Across Rhode Island, offered in partnership with the Rhode Island Center for the Book at the Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, encourages students across the state in grades 4 through 6 to read the same book and engage in community discussions and programs.
OLIS is a sponsor of the RI Center for the Book program Reading Across Rhode Island, RI's One Book, One State initiative. Reading Across RI encourages adults and young adults across the state to read the same book, and engage in community discussions and programs.
The RI Children's Book Award is a children's choice award for students in grades 3 through 5. Each year students have the opportunity to vote on their favorite book from a ballot of 20 selections nominated by a panel of librarians, reading specialists and teachers.
OLIS sponsors the Summer Reading Program, a cooperative effort among libraries in Rhode Island to motivate children and teens to read for pleasure and to help them maintain reading skills during the summer months. The Summer Reading Program also encompasses adult programs that encourage adults to explore new genres, pursue new interests, and model lifelong learning and reading to children and teens. OLIS is a member of the Collaborative Summer Library Program, a national collaboration of state library agencies and associations that works to develop materials that support a high-quality summer reading program for children, teens, and adults.
OLIS supports several statewide reading programs that engage Rhode Island youth and families. The RI Middle School Book Award is a children's choice award for youth in grades 6-8, and the RI Teen Book Award is a young adult choice award for teens in grades 9-12. RI Latino Books Month is celebrated each May and promotes books by and for Latinos.
