Public Library Standards: Management

Rhode Islanders have access to professionally managed library services.

  1. The library has a professional librarian with a Master’s Degree in Library Science from an ALA accredited program as director.
  2. The duties of the director include:
  1. administering policy, regularly reviewing and recommending policies for board action
  2. attending board meetings and serving as liaison between the board and the staff
  3. preparing and implementing the budget
  4. selecting, training, supervising, evaluating, and terminating staff
  5. being responsible for the materials selection and collection development process
  6. being familiar with local, state, and federal library-related laws and proposed legislation
  7. submitting an annual report to the Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) and other required reports to appropriate authorities
  1. Library administration maintains a manual(s) of all current policies and operating procedures for staff use.
  2. The director develops job descriptions with salary ranges for staff and conducts regular performance evaluations.
  3. At least every three years, the library conducts a community study or uses other needs assessment techniques to determine awareness of library services and to ensure community participation in their design and delivery.
