OLIS Library Card and Interlibrary Loan Policy

OLIS Library Card

The Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) Library is a member of the Ocean State Libraries (OSL) consortium. OLIS may issue OSL cards (“OLIS Library Card”) to libraries that are members of the Library of Rhode Island (LORI), but do not belong to the OSL library consortium. An OLIS Library Card enables these libraries to initiate an interlibrary loan request on behalf of a patron using the OSL online catalog. Both the requesting and supplying libraries can track the requests and monitor the loan status online.

Libraries that are current members of LORI in good standing (not owing billed items to any other LORI library) may apply for an OLIS Library Card.  Interlibrary loan service is available to valid OLIS Library Card holders. Card holders may place holds on materials accessible through the OSL catalog. The OLIS Library Card is valid for one year and will expire each year on July 1st for school libraries (September 30th for non-school libraries). Once certified for the upcoming year, libraries can renew the library card by completing the OLIS Library Card Application. The borrower must honor the set due date and the conditions of loan. Renewal requests should be made prior to the item due date. OLIS reserves the right to suspend the borrowing privileges when the library fails to respond to invoices for lost or damaged items within 60 days. Card issue, renewal and account maintenance is limited to OLIS.

OSL Title Request Procedures

  • Card holders may place holds on materials accessible through the OSL catalog. Cards are not authorized for in person use.

  • Select OLIS as the pickup location.
  • Once the item is received at OLIS, it will be checked out and routed to the requesting library. This is when the loan period begins. (The borrower must honor the set due date and the conditions of loan. Renewal requests should be made prior to the item due date).
  • Follow internal ILL procedures once the item is received.
  • Please return the materials to the owning library in delivery using their 3 letter OLIS code. (OLIS will place a date due receipt and a delivery slip in the item to the destination library with a notation at the bottom of the slip that reads: "When your patron returns this item, use a new slip and place the item in your delivery for direct return to __________" (the lending library's 3-letter code). This will allow materials to be returned to the lending library as quickly as possible)

Non-OSL Requests

An item that cannot be found through the OSL online catalog but is in the collection of another LORI library may be requested using the LORI Book and Article Request Form. If the items cannot be found in a LORI library, the item may be requested through the OLIS ILL Clearinghouse. For more information, please see Interlibrary Loan Requesting Procedures.

Interlibrary Loan Policy

The OLIS Library complies with the Library of Rhode Island Standards and Regulations. Any library that is issued an OLIS Library Card must also comply with them. Failure to do so will result in revocation of OLIS Library Card privileges.
