Between February 1 and March 4, 5,087 students in grades 3-6 cast their vote for the 2016 Rhode Island Children's Book Award winner. These students, representing 58 school and public libraries across the state, selected the Newbery Honor Book El Deafo by Cece Bell from a list of 20 nominees.
