2015: Year in Review

On a frigid day in early January 2015, the State of Rhode Island inaugurated its first woman governor, welcoming a new year and a new era of state government. The Office of Library and Information Services is proud to be part of Governor Gina Raimondo's agenda to "Make It in RI," supporting and strengthening libraries across the state to serve the life-long learning and information needs of all Rhode Islanders.

The winter of 2015 proceeded with a seemingly endless series of snowstorms that stopped library programs and library delivery as Rhode Islanders "hunkered down." But it wasn't snow that stopped delivery in April, it was the expiration of the existing interlibrary delivery contract while OLIS negotiated a new delivery contract with a new vendor, Optima Shipping Inc., to bring a new era of library delivery to Rhode Island libraries. Ocean State Libraries and Rhode Island public libraries worked hard to keep books flowing during the state's 3 week delivery hiatus. The new delivery vendor has provided excellent service and helped streamline LORI Delivery. In its continuing effort to improve resource sharing, OLIS, in partnership with Ocean State Libraries and HELIN, launched One Catalog at the end of May, and discontinued RELAIS ILL. Additionally, new Library of Rhode Island (LORI) Standards were developed in 2015, becoming effective in September; libraries must comply with the new standards by January 1, 2016.

OLIS welcomed new Youth Services Coordinator Danielle Margarida in March. Danielle had her hands full right away, as Rhode Island hosted the Collaborative Summer Library Program meeting in Newport in April; over 40 states belong to CSLP, working together to develop the framework for high quality summer reading programs. In May, kids from across the state had the opportunity to meet National Amabassador for Young People's Literature Kate DiCamillo at the Kids Reading Across RI kickoff event at the State House, diving into DiCamillo's book, Flora & Ulysses: The Illuminated Adventures. The 2015 Summer Reading Program was up and running in June, and kids learned that Every Hero Has a Story.

OLIS was proud to partner on several innovative projects in 2015. Working with the RI Family Literacy Initiative and the Adult Education Professional Center, OLIS was able to provide licenses to libraries to serve as proctor sites for the Northstar Digital Literacy Project; licenses were funded by Broadband RI. OLIS also partnered with the University of Rhode Island's Graduate School of Library and Information Studies on the Media Smart Library Project, offering a number of continuing education sessions for librarians in the area of digital competencies (Twitter, Digital Voice, Children's Independent Films, Film Programs). OLIS also offered a number of well-attended continuing education programs, including several programs for trustees (Library Trustees Institute, Cornerstones of Democracy) and programs for librarians, such as the Library Freedom Project's Privacy Workshop for Librarians, PR Tools for Library Programs, and continuing education programs for reference librarians, children's and young adult librarians, and OLIS services.

2015 also saw the opening of the new Tiverton Library in June. The $10 million facility was 14 years in the making and funded in part by a $4.1 million construction reimbursement grant from OLIS. OLIS also found a new home in 2015, moving to the Office of Digital Excellence and reuniting with the state's Division of Information Techology, which was formerly part of OLIS. Fortunately the move was virtual and OLIS staff remained in their established offices on the fourth floor of the Department of Administration; the Office of Digital Excellence is part of the Department of Administration.

OLIS continues to update librarians and library staff on its projects and activities not only through its website, but also through Rhodarian and Facebook (follow us!). Talking Books Plus patrons and libraries can find information on services to people with visual disabilities through the Talking Books Plus website and the very active Talking Books Plus News. Important news for Talking Books users during 2015 was the release of a new BARD mobile app for Android devices and the Kindle Fire, along with updates to the original iOS app.

It’s been another busy year serving Rhode Island's libraries, and we can't wait to see what 2016 brings. Happy New Year!
