2014 saw changes and new programs for libraries both in Rhode Island and across the country. Modernization of the eRate program was big news on the national level, while here in Rhode Island new Minimum Standards for Rhode Island Public Libraries went into effect and the Office of Library and Information Services (OLIS) teamed up with the Rhode Island Library Association (RILA) to make Rhode Island the first state to launch a statewide financial literacy program with the Consumer Financial Protection Bureau.
Big OLIS news in 2014 included the award of over $200,000 in Library of Rhode Island (LORI) grants to nine libraries across the state – five public libraries, two consortia, one school library, and one special library. OLIS received requests for over $622,000 for a stunning array of projects, confirming that Rhode Island libraries are stocked with creative people with innovative ideas. While LORI grants are generally funded with Library Services and Technology Act funds, OLIS also awarded a state-funded LORI grant to Ocean State Libraries to take a giant step forward in creating a statewide catalog; the grant will bridge the catalogs of OSL and most HELIN libraries.
This summer libraries sparked a reaction across the state with the annual summer reading program, which started off with the fifth annual Kids Reading Across Rhode Island escaping from Mr. Lemoncello’s Library. Governor Chaffee appointed four new members to the Library Board of Rhode Island, and the Statewide Reference Resource Center moved back to Providence Public Library. In continuing education, OLIS looked at the Changing Face/Space of the Library and explored the new normal in libraries across the state, in partnership with RILA and the Coalition of Library Advocates (COLA). OLIS helped public libraries get an edge with the Edge Assessment and Impact Survey and OLIS' work in disaster and preservation planning was featured by the Institute of Museum and Libary Services. Finally, in 2014 OLIS celebrated 50 years as the state library agency, with Karen Mellor moving in to take the helm as its eighth director. It’s been another busy year of serving Rhode Island’s libraries and OLIS looks forward to a new year filled with more exciting opportunities. Happy New Year!
