IMLS Reauthorization Signed Into Law
On December 22, President Obama signed into law the Museum and Library Services Act of 2010. Principal author of the bill, which recognizes the role of libraries in building strong and vibrant communities, was RI Senator Jack Reed. Reauthorization means that federal support to OLIS will continue.

Protecting the Past Highlighted in IMLS Report
RI's March 2010 floods underscored the need for disaster plans for libraries and cultural heritage institutions. The flood and OLIS' federally funded dPlan-RI project are highlighted in the IMLS publication Connecting to Collections: A Report to the Nation (p. 32).

Tom Viall has been appointed as the new chair of the Library Board of RI, succeeding long term chair Mark McKenney.

FCC Released E-rate Order
The Federal Communications Commission released the E-rate Order on September 28, 2010 to upgrade and modernize the E-rate program. The Order increases options for schools and libraries for broadband providers and streamlining the application process.

OSHEAN Receives $21.7M Federal Stimulus Grant
OSHEAN has been awarded a federal stimulus grant of $21.7 million to bring vastly increased broadband capacity to the community anchor institutions of Rhode Island and Bristol County, Massachusetts. These include schools, libraries, universities, community colleges, hospitals and government agencies.

Library of Rhode Island Grants
OLIS is accepting applications for Library of Rhode Island (LORI) Grants. OLIS offers LORI Grants with funds from the federal Institute of Museum and Library Services, under the Grants to States Program supported by the Library Services and Technology Act.

Summer Reading Finale
54 Summer Reading Program participants representing libraries across the state took the field August 16th at McCoy Stadium, including one lucky reader who won a trip to Disney World.

April is School Library Month
School Library Month is the American Association of School Librarians' celebration of school librarians and their programs. Every April school librarians are encouraged to create activities to help their school and local community celebrate the essential role that strong school library programs play in a student's educational career. The 2010 theme is Communities Thrive @ your library.

State Offices Closed March 31
The Office of Library & Information Services and all non-essential state offices are closed March 31. Many resources, including information on disaster recovery for libraries, are available on the OLIS website. State Offices and OLIS will reopen April 1.

Flood Recovery

Resources for Flood Victims: Rhode Island has been declared a federal disaster area. Rhode Island libraries are encouraged to review and link to programs and resources available to individuals and businesses impacted by the floods, especially the state's RI Flood Recovery resource.

If your library is flooded or has other water damage, you can contact Northeast Document Conservation Center (NEDCC) for live 24/7 phone assistance at 978-470-1010.
