Chief Serves on Library Statistics National Working Group
Chief Library Officer Howard Boksenbaum has been named a member of the IMLS Library Statistics Working Group. Members of the working group are charged with advising IMLS on national public library and state library data collections.

Governor Carcieri Helps Launch AskRI
The newly enhanced AskRI, featuring statewide access to EBSCO databases, HeritageQuest, Tutor.com and World Book was launched in a grand ceremony at the Statewide Reference Resource Center at Providence Public Library.

Erate: Funding Year 2009 Eligible Services List
On Friday, November 21, the Federal Communications Commission released the funding year 2009 Eligible Services List for the schools and libraries universal service support mechanism. The Eligible Services List indicates whether specific products or services may be able to receive discounts under the Schools and Libraries Support Mechanism.

E-Rate Discount Rate for Funding Year 2009
Discounts are based on most recent school lunch figures from the RI Dept. of Education. A 10% rate increase for libraries whose service area cover any of the following 3 school districts: Providence, Central Falls and West Warwick.

OLIS Continuing Education: Fall 2008
Over twenty programs are available throughout the state, including sessions on the state's new online electronic resources, book repair, facility planning, e-rate, podcasting, and services to children, young adults and seniors. There are also over 500 online courses available through OLIS' new partnership with WebJunction.

Access to Firstsearch is Temporarily Unavailable, 6/25/2008
An offsite server that hosts some of OLIS’ web services is down. The service provider is working on the problem. We expect the service will be restored no later than 5:00 p.m. today. The web services affected by this difficulty are: Firstsearch, BoksenBlog, and Library Event Calendar.

The 2008 children's Summer Reading Program is creeping and crawling into local libraries this June. Now in its 31st year, this cooperative effort between OLIS and Rhode Island public libraries promotes reading during summer vacation.

SurfRI Is Back!
SurfRI, Rhode Island statewide databases, is back for a second year. Search over 100 databases to find information on anything from health to history. But hurry . . . the trial only lasts until May 31st!

This is very good news for libraries who need to do lengthy procurements. Form 470 for the next funding year was typically made available on SLD site around July 1.

Two Library Construction Projects Nearing Completion
Jesse Smith LibraryThe old Jesse M. Smith Memorial Library in Burrillville will close on March 9 to move into its new quarters, which will open April 1. The Rogers Free Library in Bristol is scheduled to be completed this summer.
