LORI Email Update

January 5, 2007

Refusing mail with the domain name "lori.state.ri.us" as of Jan 1 has greatly cut down on the amount of SPAM on LORI mail, at least temporarily. We are still asking anyone with a personal LORI account, "username@lori.ri.gov", to obtain an alternate email address. We will be restricting the @lori.ri.gov domain to ILL email, i.e., xxxill accounts, in the Spring.

We have been recommending Yahoo mail: it does a great job of eliminating SPAM, it allows you to "POP" other email accounts, and it's free. However, another library has reported getting a lot of SPAM in their library Yahoo account. Another popular and robust free email system is Google's, gmail. Both sign-up pages are easy to find. Just enter "mail" in the search box at either site. There are many others and a useful overview is "Top 10 Free Email Services".

If there are several staff members needing new email addresses, purchasing a domain name for your library which can be used with many addresses may be the way to go -- a domain name with 5 or more email accounts, even a website, can be purchased for as little as $50 per year. Searching on Google and Yahoo will bring up a long list, but recommendations from libraries already using such a service would be helpful. We can keep a list and share with anyone interested.

Any LORI email account users who would like help setting up and using an alternate account, please contact Sheila. 222-5754 or Chaichin 222-5815.

And please let us know your new email address if you've done this already.
