LORI Email Server Moving

After some initials glitches Tuesday morning, the new LORI email server, as well as the old server appear to be working fine. Email users can change their settings to show lori.ri.gov as both incoming and outgoing server. If you are using Eudora or Thunderbird for your email reader, this is a good time to download the new versions!

Check below for new tips on troubleshooting setup - August 3.

Attention LORI email and FirstSearch users,

On August 1, 2006, OLIS is moving the LORI email server to RINET. Email users can expect a much more satisfying experience with their email from the robust new server as well as a more manageable email address: yourusername@lori.ri.gov

To ensure a smooth transition for everyone, we ask that you spend a few minutes to go through the following steps:

  1. Check your email software configuration. The incoming and outgoing mail server should change to lori.ri.gov on August 1, 2006. Some of you have IP number 204.139.0.110 as your incoming and outgoing mail server. Make sure you change it also to lori.ri.gov on August 1.
  2. Beginning August 1, inform contacts of new email address and change other listings, such as email signatures, to your new email, username@lori.ri.gov. Mail sent to your old address, username@lori.state.ri.us will be forwarded for 6 months.
  3. ILL Departments: change the xxxill account software to reflect the new server domain, lori.ri.gov as in #1. (call Chaichin or Sheila if you need help with the ill email account)
  4. If you have defined this IP on your Windows NT server, remember to delete it on August 1.
  5. Make sure you “pop” email to your local computer. That is, do not leave mail on the mail (pop) server. The new LORI server imposes a 20 MBs space limit for each account.

Please look out for new URL for FirstSearch. We will announce it on the LORI home page during the last week of July. When you log on to the FirstSearch through the new login page, you will have option of accessing full list of databses until the subscribed searches (several thousand) run out.

Staff in OLIS are working hard with our system consultants for the transition. We anticipate a smooth changeover. Please contact Sheila Carlson (222-5754) or Chaichin Chen (222-5815) if you have any trouble accessing your LORI email.

Some setup guidelines we've just discovered from LORI users:

  • Eudora:
If you get a message regarding SSL errors, do the following:
In Tools/Options under Checking Mail -- In the box "Secure Sockets When Receiving" choose "Never"
  • Yahoo - popping your LORI mail in Yahoo
If you get the message: "Unfortunately, there was a problem: POP server does not support LAST command...."
In "Check other mail" choose Edit
In the next screen highlight the LORI email address and choose Edit.
At the bottom of the edit screen there are several checkboxes. Uncheck the following:
    Leave Mail on Pop Server
    Retrieve New Messages Only
  • Passwords: If need your password to change your settings. Call. Looking it up is not always an option, BUT we can change it to what you want or what you thought it was! Passwords should be 6 to 8 characters with at least one number; passwords are case-sensitive.
  • Listservs: RILA-L will make a global change, switching LORI domain names from old to new. So that listserv shouldn't be a problem. However, for any other listservs you subscribe to with your LORI email, you will continue to receive messages (for a few months, for as long as they are forwarded from the old server) but you will not be able to post messages until you resubscribe with the new LORI email address.
