OLIS gathers Interlibrary Loan (ILL) statistics and technology assessment information from the LORI member libraries on an annual basis. The reports tabulated in library type breakdown can be viewed from the OLIS web site. Below are highlights derived from the submitted data. The statistics were collected between January 15 and March 15, 2007.

Public libraries are most engaged in in-state ILL. The top three in-state borrowers are also the most generous lenders to other libraries in Rhode Island. Libraries most engaged in out-of-state ILL activities are those that have access, and/or make holdings available, to national library networks such as OCLC and Docline.

Technology Assessment

Public access computers in LORI Libraries

1. Number of public access computers
   1. 1,029 computers are provided among the 21 academic library facilities.
   2. 972 computers are provided among the 71 public library facilities
   3. 1,154 computers are provided among the 78 school library facilities
   4. 71 computers are provided among the 24 special library facilities
2. Wireless access
   In 2007, 52% (compare to 39% in 2006) of LORI libraries provide wireless access for patron with laptop.

Software/Operating System

1. Libraries install Open Office: Jamestown Public and Tiverton Public libraries and Aldrich High School Library.
2. Libraries install Linux on public access or staff computers: Brown University Library, Jamestown Public Library, Tiverton Public Library.
3. Many libraries maintain both Windows and Mac OS for their computers in the library. 15 school libraries use exclusively the Apple OS system.
4. MS Office Suite is widely used by RI libraries, even by those libraries using Apple/Mac OS. Only 3 school libraries reported using Applework exclusively for library computers.

Library Employment

LORI member libraries employ 1,938 part/full time staff in 2007 in 153 library systems, which covers 194 library facilities. This is the first year that OLIS collects the statistics of the number of employees in LORI libraries.
