Training Grant

Summary of Initial Proposal

The next phase in the series of the Gates Foundation grants to support public access computing (PAC) is the opportunity for a Training Program Grant of $7,950 for OLIS. The funds will be expended in calendar year 2004 and used strictly for training public library throughout the state in topics related to PAC.

The Rhode Island Office of Library and Information Services, the State Library Agency, plans to address the following training modules with this grant:

  • Part 1—Public Access Computing (PAC) Training for public library staff in topics to support and enhance the library’s public access computing including direct training and train-the-trainer sessions. A new needs assessment survey in addition to previously collected information from the Gates Foundation and other instruments will determine the topics chosen. Videoconferencing and widespread promotion will ensure that training is provided to public library staff throughout the state.
  • Part 2—Spanish Language Profile; Services to Spanish Speaking. Training to support and promote use of the Spanish language profile in Gates libraries and other libraries in the state. The profile used within the context of training in general library services to Hispanic/Latino populations, will help RI libraries to address the needs of the state’s growing Latino population with greater confidence, knowledge, and skill. Collaboration with community agencies will be key in the success of this program and results will be shared and promoted statewide to library staff members and the public.
